As the rumor goes, the memory of a goldfish only lasts three seconds. In the time it takes to map its bowl’s perimeter, Goldfish sees the world anew, full of potential. Its life is defined by cyclical renewals—the world a sphere of chance.

Perhaps it is Goldfish who is the model practitioner of the I-Ching, translated into English as “The Book of Changes.” To make a choice is to make a change. Decisions, decisions… Those of us with decisions to weigh have our tools for divination: dice rolling, coin flipping, tarot pulling, astrology reading. Michelle has three shells.

Seeking directions, Michelle drops her shells on Lisbon’s limestone calçada and takes a photograph. Limestone—a composite of shells compressed under the weight of seawater—encounters its progeny in a moment of impact. Michelle reads the resulting message in the shells’ orientation: yin, yang, yang, a trigram. This arrangement corresponds to one of the eight cardinal points on the circle of the I-Ching, indicating a path to follow, a vector to meander. The shells drop, gesturing southwest, and Michelle moves to the next corner. Allowing chance to make change, she finds herself at the laundromat.

Change is exchanged to make clothes spin in a circle, finding themselves anew in orientation, fresh in the cycle from dirty to clean. The final divination yields the hexagram, ䷽ (62), calling attention to the significance of the small. Goldfish mouths, small things may be done, great things may not. Decisions, decisions… every choice a change, every action a minor transgression.

Special thanks to Liska Henglein for the photographs.

Good question!

How do you say what you mean? How do you say your not-knowing?

What is the relationship between methodology and legibility?

Is an idea a discrete work?

Can an individual do anything at all?

What does an evolutionary practice look like? Does it have to do with the stochastic?

What is unstable about consensus?

Is “disruption” enough?

Is the future a necessary construction for the organization of people? If not, how can action build on itself? Does action need a collective orientation?

What does it mean for something to be “political?” Does it have to be actionable?

How do you cook enough food for the week?

What are the politics of indeterminacy?

How might we consider a question like an indeterminate readymade?

Is art-making anything but a game of call and response?

How does fiction theorize differently from theory?

How does sound build boundaries that delineate one location from another? How does sound’s inherent leakiness disrupt this construction?

Can you even look at the following question at it without hearing it? I can’t. Isn’t that amazing?

Does “oooo—-ocyT—-jPaa” provide you with a compelling visual experience? It follows the rule of thirds…

If so, what does it do when it ‘seen’ without being ‘heard’?

Is a word a picture?

If making visual artwork is a way of working through an idea using visual means, how is writing different? Each is observed with the eyes, one is explicitly noisy and the other may or may not be.

What other images outside of letters are ‘read’? What do these sound like?

If these there exist relationships between symbol, meaning, and sound, can one manipulate the symbol to modulate its imagined sound and its meaning while maintaining its demand to be ‘read’?

What is the relationship between text as a symbol (icon/image), its meaning, and its sound?

Can a picture sound like what it means? Can it sound far from what it means? Can it sound without meaning anything at all?

Can a picture be a word?

Do ideas sound like something?

Inversely, when you see ❤️‍🔥, do you hear something that you can’t quite place?

How do you ask someone to ‘read’ an image as they would a text?
